Welcome to the fourth insertion of DEMUR®, a series where we will be highlighting some of the most interesting topics in all of art. This week we’ll be probing the world of contemporary skill, delving into the work of artistic and mechanical genius一Daniel Arsham.
Accrediting his expressive self to his Grandfather, from an early age Daniel Arsham was exposed to creative mediums. Through the development and refinery of his craft, today Arsham is a celebrated artist in all corners of art. He has worked with haute-couture powerhouse Dior, and world renown artist Hajime Sorayama, not to mention the plethora of other collaborations in past decades.
Beginning his journey of invention and discovery with pigment, from the early ages Arsham was often drawn to detail oriented structures. In a 2019 Sotheby’s interview, he recounts “In the earlier days I primarily made paintings.... a lot of the earlier paintings were things that depicted structures that I couldn’t yet construct”, further illustrating the visionary’s interest in all forms of art. Later taken under the wing of Merce Cunningham on a whimsical journey of sculpting and set design, the artist was finally able to realize his ideas in a physical form. This was a defining moment for Danield Arsham, foreshadowing the next chapter in his career.
Although still dabbling between artistic mediums, sculpting has taken the forefront of Arsham’s focus. Sculpting is a storytelling medium the creative has reworked to the nth degree. Within his latest work, “Connecting Time”, Arsham distorts the inherent value we have placed upon time itself. He displays the past, present and future all within one exhibit, relocating objects in a different time frame. He uses abstract mediums to demonstrate the beauty of age, showcasing the inevitable turn of future artifacts lying all around us. He toys with human perspective in an effort to shift the view of time, succeeding wonderfully.
Daniel Arsham has worked perpetually to perfect his genius, pushing the boundaries of societal standards in the name of art. The masterful designer will continue to do so in years to come, continuously bending minds and challenging constructs.
