Is ‘Defiance’ Integral to Creation?

Welcome to the 192nd insertion of DEMUR®, an analytical series highlighting the intricacies of the artistic world and the minutiae lying within. In this episode, we investigate the rebellious ethos of art, debating the necessity for defiance in light of creation, protest and authenticity.

By nature, creatives share a distinct sense of mutiny towards the constructs that bind us socially. Since the beginning of time, artisans have been using their mediums to revolt against our self-imposed, restrictive environments, pushing back against all attributes of the human condition. Opposing traditional means of rebellion, we’ve seen countless movements spark from the tune of a guitar, or the bristles on a paintbrush, leading us to question why defiance is so deeply intertwined with the artistic sphere.

If we take a look at Bob Dylan’s historic 1965 Newport Folk Festival performance, we can begin to grasp the importance of creative rebellion. Walking up on stage to an eager crowd, the famed artist so deeply intertwined with the acoustic strings of Folk music would confidently plug in an electric guitar. As he’d begin to play, the roaring echoes of displeasure and outcry from the fanbase that stood before him would symbolize a new era of Folk-rock, propelling the genre infinitely forward.

Having pioneered a new sound, Dylan would inaugurate the first of a multi-stage cycle in acceptance of a previously undiscovered niche, forcefully introducing the masses to an uncomfortable medium. While different, this premise can be applied to the likes of upcycling in fashion, at first a trashy idea that has now dominated the industry, or perhaps the obscure and unappreciated efforts of Van Gough’s now famed work.

Speaking to the universal resistance to innovation and fear of discomfort, defiance works not to spark controversy or fulfill an individuality complex, but to remove stagnancy from our creative niches. It provokes the general populous, forcing many to open their eyes to otherwise ignored streams of thought and perspective, exploring shadowed avenues rich with impact, controversy and reward.

Though this is minimal, it hit very hard. I feel inspired to ignite defiance with purpose. Internal conflict for me is sometimes feeling like my need to be defiant is useless and I’m essentially submitting to something, just not whatever norm I’m challenging that day.
