Shortly after acceptance as Dior’s menswear creative director in 2000, Hedi Slimane was in pursuit of a new silhouette. Alongside his refined skillset and articulate resume in design, Slimane unveiled a new, skinny cut male profile. Exclusively seen in his previous “Black Tie” collection under Yves Saint Laurent, the lean male figure was accentuated in full - skinny jeans, leather jackets, and tall boots were his tagline. Slimane reconstructed our perception of masculinity, conforming garments to the body he was once shunned for having. Throughout this era, he walked those with a formidable identity, paying homage to his past self and idols. Hedi Slimane’s time at Dior showed us to not only accept, but appreciate and express the male figure to one’s utmost desire.
Hedi Slimane’s reign at Dior can be partially accredited for the revival of skinny, and waxed jeans. Debuting in his Autumn 2003 collection - coined “Luster” denim, the brutalist wax coating is made with intent of deterioration, slowly crumbling with use. As age is cemented into the jean, streaks reminiscent of claw marks slowly appear, creating an effect similar to Trompe L’oeil. In great condition with a glistening sheen, tagged as an extremely rare 33x33.
