Yohji Yamamoto’s Autumn 2004 collection is widely regarded amongst the heights of his arsenal. Walking leather racing jackets and a relaxed, elevated figure, the standalone garments seeped of craftsmanship and an unexpected yet welcomed use of colour. A focal point of the collection was most definitely refined to a use of embellishments - zippers and hardware apparent in the functionality of most garments displayed. Knitwear was a staple as well, debuting the infamous ‘burnt’ alpaca hair sweater and a slim array of hand painted, abstract knits. As always, the typical Yamamoto draping fit was portrayed with elegance, showcased in nearly every look. The show’s persona was unique but maintained a simplistic regard, speaking to Yohji Yamamoto’s ability to speak through few words.
Although a subtlety in the Autumn 2004 collection, the Alpaca “burnt” knit sweater remains at the height of Yamamoto archives for it’s selective use of textile and laborious design. The highlighted motif is seemingly burnt into the fabric, leaving a mark of fleeting asymmetry to contrast the black base. Alpaca fur then weaves the entirety of the garment, distressed to emulate a worn look. Tagged as a mildly oversized large, in pristine condition throughout.
