AW05 Maison Margiela 0 Artisanal ‘Spoon’ Upcycled Silver Bracelet
Martin Margiela’s Autumn 2005 collection played on the continued trope of anonymity while using a different stylistic device. Using paparazzi as their muse, for the first time, the collective would manipulate each garment to allow for near instantaneous concealment in the case of an ambushed media-driven attack. Inviting show goers with a full custom made magazine, which features a series of tabloid style pages all of which advertised products from the season, each paper came with full descriptions and clues for the upcoming runway show. Of these hints, came the unique, torso-hooded trench coats that mimicked celebrities natural response to hiding one’s face. Extending the jacket’s back panel to create a button clasped hood, they’d explore a new frame in their anonymous trope, this time using internal responses to demonstrate the premise, as opposed to external factors like paint and masks. In addition, the Maison released a series of interesting accessories like inverted wig handbags and voodoo doll belt accessories, making Fall 2005 one of the label’s most esteemed.
Debuting in Martin Margiela’s Autumn 2005 collection, this accessory demonstrates the extent of the Belgian creative’s deconstructive design philosophies. Upcycling being a consistent theme across all avenues of his work, it was not uncommon to see repurposed flea market finds on the runway. In this instance, he’s set his focus on cutlery, having hand selected a series of unique forks and spoons to manipulate into jewelry. Ranging from rings to bracelets, this particular piece comes under the highly regarded ’Artisanal 0’ line as a silver bangle. Warped to mimic the silhouette of a standard bracelet, engraving wraps around the wearer’s wrist, before meeting engraved ‘Maison Margiela Paris’ lettering on the interior. In great condition throughout, aside from signs of discolouration.
