Jun Takahashi’s Autumn 2006 showing titled “Guru Guru” was filled with mystery, dismay and illusion. Masked vessels strut the runway as they blindly presented Takahashi’s collection, eerily hidden in bondage-like headwear. Concealment was a theme throughout the show as draping textiles covered nearly every inch of those encased, leaving viewers only with the model’s silhouette. Anonymity frees the textile from it’s shackled identity and instead pushes onlookers to obsess over the item worn. As Takahashi toys with the concept of wearable expression, he uses restricting mediums to convey the feeling of self-confinement many impose. Through a polarizing concept, he encourages the audience to liberate and articulate emotion through appearance, for the contrary is repressive.
First seen in look 13/29, these synched trousers further the runway’s stifled persona. Spiral lacing climbs up the leg, embedded into the deep green velvet textile and tightened to one’s desire. Tasseling explodes outwards and trails behind when worn, delicately hanging from the weaved root. Patty Smith’s iconic lightning embroidery then sits subtly atop the knee in a contrasting black thread. Raw metallic zipper detailing finalizes the bottom hem as symmetric paneling layers throughout. In new with tags condition, fitting cropped at a size 2 (medium) or 29x22.5.
