  • Stepping foot into a new millennia, Martin Margiela looked to expand his reach far past the Parisian fashion circuit. As consumers flocked to his eponymous label, he began searching for locations outside of his home in Paris, before landing on Japan in the year 2000. A joint venture between Kokonoe Corp ltd. and the Maison, his first Eastern storefront would open in Tokyo’s Ebisu district. This retailer would prove successful, but as the Maison continued to amass a global consumer basis, it became apparent additional infrastructure was needed. As a result, Margiela’s Omotesando district storefront would open on November 1st, 2007, in Shibuya, Tokyo.

Martin Margiela is known to opt for engaging collectables opposed to typical show invitations. In light of such, for his Omotesando grand opening, the designer took part in the Japanese tradition of gift giving (Temiyage), to inaugurate his newest entity. Producing 100 limited edition Rubik’s cubes designed by the creative himself, first customers would receive the puzzle upon entry. 15 years later, these accessories have become nearly impossible to find due to their extremely limited run and lucrative aura. Recognized only by the cube’s all white exterior and typewriter font, a ironic play on the puzzle itself, lettering reads “Maison Martin Margiela Omotesando Opening November 1st, 2007”. This particular cube is in deadstock condition and has never been used, coming with a branded dust bag to pair.
