AW19 Louis Vuitton ‘1.1 Millionaire’ White Gold Boxy Sunglasses

Louis Vuitton’s ‘Millionaire’ shape is arguably one of the most iconic eyewear staples in fashion design history. First debuting in 2004 under direction of Marc Jacobs, he’d work alongside Pharrell Williams and Bape’s Nigo to co-design the iconic silhouette. Originally a rounded frame with gold hardware detailing on the hinge, upper frame and temple, the shades would attract a slew of attention after Williams wore them to Paris Fashion Week that seem year. Created with hopes of bridging the gap between affluent wear and hip-hop - a trope carried throughout Jacobs career at LV, Williams would describe the Millionaires as “one part Tony Montana, one part The Notorious B.I.G.”. Adopted by Kanye West after his mother Donda gifted him a pair of Christmas in 2005, she’d write “I surprised Kanye that year with those glasses. I almost broke the bank to do it but his reaction when I handed him those Millionaire glasses was worth it.” Ultimately creating an onslaught of celebrities who began dawning the shape, the Millionaries quickly became an ‘it’ accessory and by 2007 the French Maison would begin releasing new colour ways. Prompting industry figureheads like Jay-Z and Rihanna to sport the glasses, they’d go down as a cornerstone in hip-hop’s ascent to luxury wear.

 

Following Marc Jacobs esteemed career, over a decade later, the late Virgil Abloh would reinvent the designer’s famed shape for his Fall 2019 collection, this time opting for a rather boxy reboot. Adorned with the signature metallic hardware along the upper frame and temples, a slanted, mirrored frame stands alongside a subtle LV motif in the corner. Creating a stark contrast between the gold metallic accents and snow white frame, they’re then completed with a Louis Vuitton signature on the interior arm. In pristine condition throughout, comes with the dust cloth and original box.
