AW20 Maison Margiela ‘Hole Punch’ Black Cut Out Hoodie
John Galliano’s Fall 2020 collection at Maison Margiela revisited artisanal tropes in a sporadic palette. This season’s focus was the demonstration of a creative journey, showcased effortlessly in his freeze-frame garments. As they stood atop models, many of these ‘unfinished’ items featured deconstructive properties, such as hanging threads and raw hems, as if they walked out of the studio and onto the runway. Galliano “decided that studio-reworked charity shop finds deserve to be sold as they are”, feeling a little braver with his outlandish design theory. Masks were most definitely a focal point, in pair with hole punch garments and layers of depth. The colour palette alone was a collection in itself, ranging from lime greens to brown, teals and yellow, with appearances of cherry red and forest green. Despite such contrast in pigment, Galliano saturated each hue, retaining a concise vision throughout.
As seen atop the catwalk, this sweater features a consistent ‘hole punch’ technique in a symmetric pattern. Known as laser-stamping, the transparent detailing runs down the body, sleeves and hood, accented only by the Margiela’s four white stitches on the underside. Complete with metallic aglets and cotton drawstrings, this hoodie comes in an extremely oversized cut, fitting a mens size large while tagged as an extra small, in pristine condition throughout.
