AW22 Rick Owens ‘Urinal’ Rotten Crew Black Knitted Tank-top
Rick Owens’ Fall 2022 collection was titled ‘Strobe’ in light of Philips bulbs’ that sat atop model’s heads. Having recently returned from Egypt, the American designer was inspired by the East’s geometry, stating “they have those shapes, those beautiful shapes” in a pre-show interview. While gorgeous in symmetric design and brutalist construction, it seemed as if Owens shied from the runway’s primary theme, BDSM. Seen in the likes of gimp masks, spiked dog collars, and of course the infamous ‘Urinal’ vest, the creative opted to explore his widely publicized interest in sex on the catwalk. While provoking, this concept is rather familiar for the seasoned designer, seen in his 2008 ‘blowjob’ photoshoot or 2017 ‘butt muscle’ music video (watch at your own risk). Dawning abrasive silhouettes and degrading tropes, Owens embraced his obscure relationship with sexuality, normalizing his kinks at the forefront of millions.
Debuting in look 7/45, this ‘Rotten Crew’ knitted tank-top epitomizes the Fall ‘22 collection. Reading ‘Urinal’ in a bold digitized font, Owens’ draws reference to Body Writing, a sexual and often submissive act in which a dominant counterpart scribes degrading adjectives along one’s body. In this case, the designer is essentially portraying the wearer as a urinal themself, inviting others to urinate on them (piss play). Coming in a cashmere knitted base, contrast lettering sits across the chest in pair with ‘Strobe FW22’ detailing on the underside. To finish, the body’s left hem is split to reveal the wearer’s abdominal region, tagged as a size large in pristine condition throughout.
