  • Jean Paul Gaultier’s Autumn 1997 collection titled ‘Fight Racism’ took a stand against systemic discrimination. Void of caucasian models, the designer provided a spotlight for those oppressed, mocking racist ideologies with powerful, suited looks. Displays of public affection came in pair with a dominating palette, accented by formidable trenches and full print dresses. Exaggerated wigs stood tall among woven headwear and striped scarves, effortlessly complimenting the slim, dark toned figures. Over the course of the 30 minute collection, we’d see Gaultier challenge a plethora of industry standards, demanding change in the face of couture.

While Jean Paul Gaultier’s 1997 show may have unveiled an array of prestigious garments, the collection’s poster boy was found in ‘Fight Racism’ graphics. Using a stylistic medium known as pointillism to depict a cherry red illustration, two neo-Nazi skinheads stand in various poses with ironic lettering that reads “FIGHT RACISM”. Complete with metallic hardware and a breast pocket, tagged as a size large in great condition throughout.
