  • Inducted in 1997, Nicholas Ghesquière’s time at Balenciaga became a distinct memory in the minds of die-hard enthusiasts and similar fashion critics. Marking the beginning of a 15 year venture, Ghesquière built the framework for predecessors like Demna Gvasalia, the present creative director, by reviving the brand into what it’s known as today. Resurrecting the chic silhouettes and affluence once associated with Balenciaga, Ghesquière unveiled a new stature to the unconcerned audience that was still morning the loss of Cristóbal Balenciaga. Through the soft leather of the notable “City Bag”, or the bellowing references deriving from the roots of the label, Ghesquière was able to nod at the past while reinterpreting such through the eyes of the future, as after all, he was only 28. His work has been praised for decades and continues to pursue a red glow in the hearts of Balenciaga clients, the appreciation for his craft ever-growing as the clock ticks forward.

Attracting those “in the know” such as Kate Moss, the Balenciaga “City” bag was a instant hit upon release. Sifting it’s way through the hands of celebrities and influencers, the soft leather that nearly defeated the silhouette quickly became an it bag. When proposed by Nicolas Ghesquière to the management hierarchy, it was shot down almost immediately, but the French designer persisted and was able to persuade in creating 25 runway samples. Shocked, the public became desperate to attain such a luxury, and Balenciaga produced the chic handbag for years to come. Featuring the draping tassels and a delicate lambskin exterior, metallic hardware runs throughout. A rope weaved handle and optional shoulder sling, sit in bliss among metallic accents and belted hardware, aged to perfection in a distant black colour. In great condition throughout.
