FW19 Prada “Frankenstein” Full Print Camp Collar Button Up
In the Fall 2019 collection, Miuccia Prada reinterprets the historic piece of romantic gothic literature - “Frankenstein” by Mary Shelly. Published in 1818, Shelly, at the time an undermined woman in a misogynistic world, anonymously documented the tale of a mad scientist attempting to create life. By using reclaimed body parts and clasping each with hideous stitches, the monster is brought to with an assortment of chemicals and a “spark”. The story continues on, and the monster is rejected from society as a result of his appearance, eternally left yearning for human connection.
In Prada’s Fall runway, she focuses on the premise of romance and the contrasting reality some face. By using “symbols of trashy horror movies”, she’s able to strip away the constructs of beauty, and convey her ideas in a rather comedic way. The collection looks to the strengths and weaknesses of humanity, all of which are exemplified in the silhouette of Mary Shelly’s; Frankenstein. Featured on the garment itself, the illustrated creature is placed in an abstract manner. Bolts of lightning shoot out in the background, paying homage to the spark that ignited the creators life. Green roses then coat the underside and sleeves, also appearing on patch in purple as a motif of love. Fitting a size large, in pristine condition throughout.
