  • Rei Kawakubo’s Spring 2002 collection titled ‘Cuba’ centred around the tropics. Throughout the runway, one of Cuba’s largest exports, the cigar, symbolized a national, traditional and habitual treasure. Tracing back to the roots of Cuban culture (as early as 1492), the leaf wrapped, tobacco infused smoke was partly exiled as American sanctions prohibited import. In the spring of 2002, Rei Kawakubo revisits the Southern luxury in a variety of hand painted motifs. The artist works without regard for shadows or intricacies, instead moving the viewer’s eye to muffled shapes and bold lines. In doing so, the larger image is depicted, showcasing comically large cigars and equally grand individuals.

Debuting in the Spring of 2002, these bottoms feature a hand painted motif on the front of either leg. A dark red base sits atop the indigo wash, accented by tan depictions of Cuban individuals. 3D lettering reads ‘Panente’ or Harvest to finish, accented by metallic hardware and a wide cut. In pristine condition throughout, fitting a size 31x28.
