  • SS02 Junya Watanabe “Eternal Love” Poem Indigo Washed Denim

Titled “Poem”, the Spring 2002 fashion show was presented in the form of a revolutionary collection, demolishing expectations for the Japanese creative. “Poem” showcased a plethora of iconic garments, each consisting of tragic love confessions, abstract stanzas and one-word phrases like “watermelon” and “german dog”. However, the most interesting aspect of lies within the poems themselves, subtly spoken in broken english. Every poem was written at the hands of Watanabe’s employees, adding a sense of authenticity to every t-shirt and jean. Be it “curry rice” or a confession of love, Junya Watanabe gave each a voice and platform. The sheer heterogeneity this collection offered beautifully contrasted the bland essentials each piece was crafted upon, further proving just how intuitive the Japanese creative is.

The specific garment for sale is known as the “eternal” poem. Printed atop a classic pair of Levi’s indigo wash denim, the stanza follows down the left thigh in a white font. The verse reads: “I’m shy to speak about love, but I just want to tell you to be loved by you is my joy your dream is my life my dream is to be with you eternally”, a heartful of emotions poured into a physical medium. The vague illustration of what the author refers to as “you”, allows the audience to relate each line to one of their own, establishing a personal connection. In phenomenal condition aside from light use along the bottom hem, and strokes of character throughout - tagged as a size large or 32x30.
