Junya Watanabe’s Spring 2002 collection titled “Poem” explored love in many different ways. Walking an array of tragic confessions, abstract stanzas and few-word phrases like “watermelon” and “german dog”, the artisan strived to epitomize how lust felt. Enlisting the tailors, pattern makers and staff who help bring collections to life, Watanabe instructed they illustrate their emotional viewpoints. As a result, each poem is inherently unique and personal to the author with legitimacy to one’s desires. The text’s heterogeneity is sincere and authentic, reinforced by the subtly broken English in which it was translated to. Despite rather minimal garments, the poems are insightful themselves, speaking for the items they’re bestowed upon. Not only are they captivating, but relatable and sincere, spoken from people, to people.
Created in part with Levi’s, a long-standing accomplice of the Watanabe namesake, this pair of denim is crafted from an indigo cotton base. Lettering spirals around the entirety of the jean, fragmented at every seam and hem to create a displaced appearance. The poem itself reads of lust and romance, obsessing over one’s nuance through a rose tint. In great condition throughout with signs of wear, fitting a size 34x31.5.
