Junya Watanabe’s Spring 2002 collection titled “Poem”, explored love in many different ways. Walking an array of tragic confessions, abstract stanzas and few-word phrases like “watermelon” and “german dog”, the artisan strived to epitomize how lust felt. Enlisting the tailors, pattern makers and staff who help bring collections to life, Watanabe instructed they illustrate their emotional viewpoints. As a result, each poem is inherently unique and personal to the author with legitimacy to one’s desires. The text’s heterogeneity is sincere and authentic, reinforced by the subtly broken English in which it was translated to. Despite rather minimal garments, the poems are insightful themselves, speaking for the items they’re bestowed upon. Not only are they captivating, but relatable and sincere, spoken from people, to people.
Printed atop a pair of Levi’s 503 denim, a poem is stamped on the underside of the left leg. Clashing against an aged indigo wash, bold white lettering reads “You Fulfill Me” as the author lusts over one’s complexion. The stanza touches on the minutae of love, obsessing on one’s scent, touch and voice. Completed with metallic detailing and a leather jacron label, these jeans remain at the height of Watanabe’s archive. Fitting a size 34x30.5, in great condition throughout.
