SS02 Yohji Yamamoto x Spotted Horse ‘Carpenter’ Ash Denim
Yohji Yamamoto’s Spring 2002 collection was a turning point in the Japanese designer’s career. Continuing to collaborate with Adidas for the second season in a row (prior to the Y-3 label), he’d step foot in the world of denim for the first time. Having never produced a denim product in his life, for Spring 2002 he’d centre his entire collection around jeans. Breathing new life into his namesake label, Yamamoto would collaborate with Spotted Horse Craft, a brand founded by Hideki Ozono. Originally, Ozono began making jeans in Kojima, which is “widely recognized for having some of Japan’s best denim-makers”. Branching out as an independent in 1996, he’d established Spotted Horse craft in 1999, with his atelier in Sakai. Specializing in heavyweight, perfected washes and expertly tailored outerwear, together Yamamoto and Ozono would realize a now esteemed collection, working together for many years after.
Debuting in the Spring of 2002, this gorgeous pair of carpenter denim was produced in collaboration with both Yohji Yamamoto and Spotted Horse Craft. Featuring a series of intricate details and compartments on either leg, a suede jacron label sits atop the waist band, in pair with an ash wash and straight cut. In pristine condition, they fit a size 32x29.
