Martin Margiela’s brief venture at Hèrmes is often under appreciated. Despite such a deconstructive design philosophy, his stay would feature toned down works, focusing on the technicalities of craft rather than premise or forethought. Over a six year span, ranging from ‘97-‘03, Margiela would focus on evolving the luxury market in a series of ways, making clothing for the wearer themself, rather than those onlooking. He didn’t reinvent the Birkin or Kelly bag, but instead he chose to breathe life into the origins of design, the ethos of runway fashion. Leveraging the Parisian label’s budget, Martin would work with exclusively opulent textiles, differing from the media’s negativity to innovative upon the traditions of Hermès.
Debuting in the Spring of 2004, Margiela’s final year at Hermès, this splatter print jacket truly exemplifies his work at the namesake. Blending a silk-denim textile with Hermès’ signature orange pigment the jean base is coated with sporadic paint detailing. Cut to perfection, this jacket compliment with engraved metallic buttons and cursive branding on either cuff, finalized by navy blue striping towards the upper torso. In great condition throughout, tagged as a women’s large, fitting a men’s small.
