  • At heart, Martin Margiela is a performance artist. Since his inaugural collection, the designer has continued to host some of this era’s most defining and groundbreaking runway shows, putting an emphasis on theatrics. However, above all, Margiela is a non-conformist, a rebel in it’s truest form, who refuses to abide by restricting terms. His Spring 2008 collection emphasized this characteristic as he disbanded from the catwalk for the first time in two decades. Enlisting five photographers to capture the essence of his work, Margiela would display still frames on a white-walled gallery space. In turn, the designer was able to demonstrate alternative perspectives through unique photography styles, each focusing on the mind-bending collection at hand. Through optical illusions, many centred around Trompe L’oeil properties, he was able to convey a thought of disconnect, forcing his audience into alternative views.

The height of Spring 2008 is embodied by the ‘target’ tank-top, a garment lined with bullet holes and multi-coloured rings. Beginning at the front, each perforation follows to the underside as if one was shot sporadically, passing clean through the body itself. Complete with a raw neckline and sleeveless cut, sporting the Maison Margiela infamous numeric tag to finish. In great condition throughout, fitting a size large.
