SS17 Louis Vuitton ‘Impala’ Loose Gauge Mohair Knitted Sweater
Kim Jones’ Spring 2017 collection at the Louis Vuitton Maison was a tie between the designer’s vast cultural identity. A three way intersection between his roots in Africa, London, and current residence in Paris, the show stood as a homecoming of sorts. Starting with London, we saw reference to the UK’s punk upheaval, meaning bondage, mohair knits, D-Rings, dog collars and more. Fittingly, Jones is an avid collector of Vivienne Westwood and Malcom McLaren’s; ‘Seditionaries’ - meaning he got it right. Travelling South, we saw exotic textiles from the heart of Africa, including but not limited to crocodile and ostrich, as well as traditional Masai patterning. Then, we landed back in the European circuit, exploring what ‘home’ feels like. In Jones’ case, that meant the origins of Louis Vuitton; monogram camp collars, loafers and of course, reincarnations of archived LV handbags. Spring 2017 was among the heights of Kim Jones’ reign, a continuation of his prestigious and acclaimed portfolio.
Punk, in it’s truest form, is a deviation from just about everything couture. At the sub-culture’s height, it rebelled from every tradition fashion had previously indoctrinated, spewing an anarchist mentality through belligerent expression. With this in mind, it’s easy to grasp the irony of a Seditionaries classic, the mohair knit, atop a Louis Vuitton runway. However, as with all things, fashion cycles, leaving us with a luxury take on the classic silhouette. Coming in a red, hot pink, black and sky blue pigment, this sweater features colour block detailing down the body and sleeves. Complete with a metallic ‘LV’ pin, mohair detailing spills off each hem as a final touch. In great condition throughout, fitting a size medium.
