Junya Watanabe’s Spring 2019 collection was said to depict “the innocent childhood sensibility of obsessing over heroes and hobbies.” In this, Watanabe strived to dress each model with utility, as if those walking are a common idol among youth. The aesthetic produced is similar to action figures like ‘G.I Joe’, displaying a major focus on utilitarian design. He elevates this playful persona with authentic, military grade textiles like Gore-Tex and nylon from ‘ArkAir’, a UK based brand fitting the British Royal Marines and French Legion. Because of this, high quality textiles are found throughout the collection in a multitude of hybrid pieces. Watanabe communicates a feeling of childhood amusement within these so-called figurines, yet maintains a high stature of craftsmanship throughout.

 

Becoming increasingly sought after as Junya Watanabe continues to surge, this ballistic vest is a focal point of Watanabe’s vision. An industrial velcro clasps the front while also holding a removable pocket on the underside. Extremely versatile due to the adjustable straps on each hem, asymmetric zippers lay on either side of the vest. The interior padding can also be removed, allowing for seasonal wear.
