SS20 Undercover x Cindy Sherman ‘Untitled Stills #21’ Portrait Trousers

Jun Takahashi’s Spring Summer 2020 collection titled “I hold a beast, an angel and a madman in me”, referenced the work of Cindy Sherman, a renowned American photographer. Most known for her “Untitled Film Stills” series, a collection of 69 monochromatic images featuring herself as the protagonist, she encapsulates the 1950’s pervasive narrative of femininity over three decades later. Illustrating prevalent stereotypes with a constant sense of movement and outcasted rebellion, Sherman stages herself in a variety of settings, egos and poses. Characters like the housewife, office girl and librarian are featured, always looking outside of the frame in a distant regard. Each still is familiar, yet mocking in an aspect of traditionality. She mimics the role of a “female” but questions the expectations for one, toying with the idea of an acceptable woman in today’s beauty standards. Sherman represents not only the popularized version of a heroine, but also the possibilities one may choose to pursue. By personifying all of these identities, she represents the ability to become each, proving the capability to reach outside of one’s origin and loosen the grips of staganancy.

 

Debuting in the Spring of 2020, this pair of trousers features an adorned portrait of Cindy Sherman towards the bottom hem. As the 21st of 69 stills in her monochromatic series, which also doubles as the most iconic photo, the graphic is constructed of a jacquard weave. Gazing into the distance, she’s positioned in the foreground of high-rise buildings, suited in a form fitting overcoat and bowed hat to pair. In regard to the bottoms themselves, a Cindy Sherman tag is found just beneath the exterior waistband, completed with a wide, draping silhouette. Tagged as a rare size extra large or 34x34, these trousers are in pristine condition throughout.
