SS21 Balenciaga ‘Shirt’ Hybrid Flannel Wide Cut Blue Wash Denim

Demna Gvasalia’s Spring 2021 collection at the Balenciaga Maison was created amidst global crisis. Released at the height of the pandemic, Gvasalia, much like other designers, was forced to rethink the concept of runway fashion altogether. Limited to an isolated performance, he, alongside a small team of creatives, opted to unveil the Balenciaga Spring ‘21 season digitally. Constructing an array of looks in an e-commerce based aesthetic, each model was photographed on their own, surrounded by information regarding the clothes they wore and the category they fell under. Breaking down the composites of each textile and cut, we saw reimagined oversized silhouettes, John Galliano inspired gazette prints and distressed cable knit sweaters reminiscence of Raf Simons’ Autumn 2001 Riot! Riot! Riot! collection. Pushing an emphasis towards both loungewear and office casual attire, as that’s what seemed to have emerge alongside law abiding isolation, the Georgian designer innovated regardless of such unexpected factors.

Debuting in the Spring of 2021, this pair of denim plays on Gvasalia’s continuously ironic tropes. Taking aim at a cultural style typically used when an individual is hot, the creative merges a flannel shirt into the waistband, allowing for the sleeves to be tied in the front. Making for incredibly unique styling opportunities, the flannel comes in a checkered, monochromatic pattern, fitted with pearl buttons and an embroidered Balenciaga logo on the chest pocket. Sitting alongside a light wash pair of wide cut denim, the silhouette truly encompasses Gvasailia’s deconstructive ingenuity. Fitting a size 32x33, in pristine condition throughout.
