Martin Margiela’s Spring 1991 collection once again pushed away from the traditional quota of a typical runway show. Mailing a hand typed invitation that disclosed the collection’s location and time on Margiela’s personal typewriter, the Belgian designer would have 10 staff members (including himself) sign each individual letter prior to dispatch. Holding the collection in an abandoned parking garage far from the Parisian circuit, he would simply instruct audience members to show up, without any indication of seating, a defined catwalk or show at all. Serving red wine in plastic cups, all of a sudden the presentation would simply begin, with models elbowing and somewhat shoving their way through the crowd. Followed behind them by a handheld camera, the entire show would be documented from a follower’s point of view. Walking deconstructed dresses, models strut with their significant others and children, while sporting Frankenstein denim jackets and pronounced shoulders. In all, the Spring 1991 season, which doubles as the creative’s fourth career runway show would be one of his most wearable to date, and subsequently era defining.

Debuting in the Spring of 1991, this gorgeous overcoat comes in a black colouring, featuring four chest pockets and a double breasted silhouette. Fit with marble-esque button hardware, Margiela’s iconic four stitches and blue shoulder inserts for increased mobility, the form fitting silhouette is finished with a somewhat rounded yet dagger collar and darting on the sleeves. Lacking a size tag, this piece fits a women’s medium and is in great condition throughout. Truly a classic, once in a lifetime item that aided in defining fashion history.
