Jean Paul Gaultier’s experiment with the trompe l’oeil medium is a well documented creative muse adapted in the 90’s. Prevalent in nearly every collection, the designer creates an aspect of depth through 3D full print graphics, such as the muscle shirt displayed above. Popularized by comedian Robin Williams after wearing the classic button down to an unknown red carpet event, the muscle print has since gained mass notoriety among archivists alike.
Using pointillism to define the chiseled graphic, an array of black dots are intentionally placed in vibrant hue of red. The naked graphic continues to the underside where one’s back and butt is shown, complete with Gaultier’s signature hang tab. With a looser cut, the textile is rather silky and free flowing, creating a draping silhouette when worn. Tagged a size 48, in pristine condition throughout.
