AW19 Vetements ‘Fuck’ Inside Out Patched Oversized Hoodie

Demna Gvasalia’s Fall 2019 collection at the helm of Vetements was titled “Anti-Social”. A play on the intensive social-media presence today’s society retains, his aim with this runway showing was clear; disrupt. Gvasalia’s first look sported a graphic turtleneck that summed the runway’s attitude, reading “Warning: What you are about to see will disturb you. There is a dark side to humanity the censors won’t let you see, but we will. View it at your own risk.” Following was a slew of rebellion, youth plaguing tees with anti-establishment graphics and signs of anarchy. Through ill fitting cuts and asymmetric prints, oversized bootlegs swallowed each model into a shadow of fabric. Draping textiles covered faces, speaking to this era’s pervasive norms while demonstrating what may lie beneath, both online or in person. “Our inspiration starts on the Internet, that’s how we work. But we only see 20 percent of it—behind that is the part you don’t know about. I didn’t.” Gvasalia stated, in relation to the Dark-web.

 

A depiction of the Fall 2019 collection’s ethos, this hoodie portrays the defiant, uprooting mentality Gvasalia employed throughout. Simply reading “Fuck”, the white patched centre logo sits among a released kangaroo pocket and embroidered namesake logo. On the underside, hidden beneath the heavy weight hood, lettering reads “Hopeless romantic seeks filthy whore”. The patching is strategically placed to progress the underlying ‘never judge a book by it’s cover’ narrative, only revealed when worn. In pristine condition, tagged as a size small, fitting an oversized large.
